At the age of 13, Death of Group 1 winner and leading sire Havana Gold.
Leading sire Havana Gold has passed away at the age of 13, and his own sire, Havana Grey, was the champion first-season sire in 2022.
On Thursday, David Redvers’ Tweenhills Stud in Gloucestershire announced the sad news. Since 2014, Havana Gold had been there.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our stallion Havana Gold, aged 13, after sustaining a fatal pelvis injury this afternoon,” a statement on their website read.
“Havana Gold was the leading UK-based first-season sire in 2017 and the leading UK-based sire of two-year-olds in 2021.
“His first son to stud, Havana Grey, was crowned leading UK-based first-season sire in 2022 and Havana Gold was also the sire of numerous stakes winners including El Caballo, Tabdeed, Treasuring, Chipotle, Fearby, Chateau and last season’s unbeaten two-year-old Streets Of Gold.”
Sir Eric Parker bred the son of Teofilo from Desert Style, the dam of the Group-winning sprinter Jessica’s Dream.
Havana Gold was purchased by Qatar Racing when he was just two years old. He went on to win the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat when he was three years old for Qatar Racing and CSH before retiring to stud at Tweenhills in 2014, “where he will be much missed.”
Havana Gold was a vendor buyback for 50,000 gns at the foal sales when he was consigned by his breeders, Crimbourne Stud. In 2011, Amanda Skiffington bought him for 80,000 gns at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale.
When he was just two years old, he won his first race for Richard Hannon in the Carmichael Humber silks, followed by a victory at Ascot. After Ryan Moore was disqualified at Deauville due to a slipped saddle, Havana Gold made up for it in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket and the Listed Ascendant Stakes at Haydock for his new owners.
Even though he lost only one head to Ghurair in a valuable sales race at Newmarket the following time, it was effectively his first defeat.
He finished close to fifth behind Style Vendome in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains after finishing second in the Craven to Toronado the following spring.
Before winning the Jean Prat at Chantilly by a narrow neck over Silverfield, Havana Gold was fourth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas behind Magician.
A fifth-place finish in the Prix Guillaume D’Ornano at Deauville marked the end of his racing career.
His only Group 1 winner to date is Havana Grey, who stands at Whitsbury Manor Stud. El Caballo, Treasuring, and Tabdeed have also done well as stakes winners, and he has many Listed winners to his name.
