The Niarchos family put Haras de Fresnay-le Buffard up for sale, saying, “Right move for us.”
The Niarchos family has put up for sale one of the world’s most famous and historic stud farms in the heart of the prestigious Normandy breeding and horseracing region.
Since the late Stavros Niarchos purchased Haras de Fresnay-le Buffard from Marcel Boussac, a world-renowned breeder and owner, in 1979, the family has been in charge of it.
Although the asking price has not been made public, it is anticipated that the international racing community will be very interested in the sale. The family’s global racing and breeding operation, which includes Europe, the United States, Australia, South Africa, and Japan, continues to have their full commitment.
Alan Cooper, the Niarchos family’s longtime racing manager, commented on the decision to sell: Although it is difficult for the family to say goodbye to Fresnay, the fact that we now have horses in a variety of international locations and that our racing and breeding interests have developed over time makes this the right move for us at this time
Fresnay-le-Buffard has produced champions and Classic winners for generations, including Miesque, Kingmambo, Sulamani, Hernando, and Six Perfections, who sport the renowned dark blue, light blue cross belts, and white cap racing colors.
The French industrialist Marcel Boussac was the first to establish the farm’s reputation. The Niarchos family quickly built on the farm’s tradition of breeding Classic winners on the famous Fresnay-le-Buffard lands, winning 45 European Classics, seven Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, and seven Breeders’ Cups.
In addition to the 12 ha/30 acres of park land, the main farm includes 205 hectares/506 acres of pasture. At the Haute Cote, which is adjacent, there are also 65 ha (160 acres) of pasture, 26 ha (64 acres) of woodland, and 1.8 ha (4.5 acres) of gardens. The site’s size and configuration make it open to additional development.
The stud farm has grown to include additional lands, barns, and a pre-training track over the past 43 years. After consulting with international agronomists, the paddocks of the entire farm were recently resown to the highest quality and are maintained by a rotation of sheep and cattle. Barns and stable yards carefully designed to support the paddocks provide approximately 200 boxes throughout the main property. At the Haute Cote annex, there is also a 14-stall isolation barn.
